What Is Okinawan Karate?

Karate is a style of empty hand defense. It utilizes kicking, punching, blocking, throwing, and take downs to protect oneself from one or more attackers.
Originally called te or "hand" , its roots stem from old style Chinese Boxing. Then in 1936 at the "meeting of the masters" the term karate was coined. Karate means    "empty hand".
Karate was initially meant for self protection uses only and even then only when absolutely necessary. It wasn't until after WWII that competition became involved.
Traditional Karate is meant to be a way of life, a code on how we should live. It teaches us to be kind, humble, and compassionate. This is the dif
ference between traditional and sport karate.
